Diagram Background/Description:
Offshore wind turbines generate medium-voltage AC power (1), which is collected and transformed to higher-voltage AC power (2) by means of a transformer or group of transformers. The AC power is converted to DC power (3) by means of an AC/DC converter which is usually of the type of a voltage source converter (VSC); two level or multilevel. VSC-HVDC is the preferred technology due to its smaller footprint and more advanced/flexible control compared to the Line-Commutated Converter (LCC) HVDC technology. The converted power, in stage 3, is transmitted at high voltage low-loss DC current by the DC transmission system (4). Finally, the transmitted DC power is converted back to AC (5) and injected to the AC grid.
